2010 Tentative Event Calendar Now Available
You can view the 2010 Tentative Event Calendar (PDF) here.
Workshop Series - The series this year will contain four (4) workshops beginning in March. The purpose of this series is to help educate members in running an efficient and successful business, and to help ensure longevity and prosperity. Topics will include professional tips and techniques on cost cutting, payroll, accounting, insurance, marketing, pr, web technology, social networking, sales, and closing the deal. Each workshop will be held on the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 am with breakfast available. A "Series Discount" will be available for pre-payment of all four workshops.
Lunch Bunch Series - We are continuing the popular Lunch Bunch Series to promote our member restaurants and to provide a monthly opportunity for member networking. Lunches are held on the 3rd Friday of each month at 11:45 am. Reservations are not required. If you know of a great restaurant to have lunch, convince them to become members of the PBA.
Community Series - The series offers important updates that affect all of us doing business in Penfield and will include the Annual State of the Town Address in February and the Annual Town Updates with Jim Costello in November.
Networking Series - By networking, we build important alliances and increase our customer base. In addition to the Lunch Bunch Series, we will be holding a social networking event in August, an awards dinner in October, and our annual Holiday Party in December.
Independence Day Parade - Once again, we will be participating in the Penfield Independence Day Parade on July 4th. With Penfield celebrating its' 100th anniversary, the parade will be larger than ever. The parade, besides being a lot of fun, offers the PBA and the floats' participants / sponsors important visibility to thousands of spectators and potential customers. Last year, the PBA won the Most Patriotic Float award. This year, we plan to win again. So now is the time to consider signing up to become a sponsor and/or volunteer.
NEW! 1st Annual PBA Awards Dinner Scheduled for October
This October, the PBA will hold its' First Annual PBA Awards Dinner where we will honor a PBA Business of the Year as well as a PBA Business Person of the Year. Additional recognitions will also be awarded. This will be the start of something big! Stay tuned for more details.
NEW! 2010 Referral Program Introduces PBA Dollars
Beginning in 2010, the PBA will be implementing a Referral Program and introducing PBA Dollars. For each new member referral, existing members will receive PBA dollars (equal to US cash dollars) that can be used towards admission to PBA events. The program will be officially launched in January at which point we will outline the details. However, feel free to contact us with any ideas you might have regarding this program.
NEW! Learn About Our Members Through New Business Segment Spotlight
The PBA is dedicated to encouraging the support of local business, the construction of PBA member alliances, and the transaction of mutually beneficial business and sponsorship between PBA members. With this in mind, beginning in January 2010, we will be featuring a monthly spotlight on a business segment of which PBA members belong. These spotlighted members will be able to explain in detail exactly what it is that they do, what products/services/solutions they provide, and why it is important for the rest of us to do business with them. This will hopefully educate the membership on some of our more mysterious members and generate a greater amount of internal business for us all.
Join a PBA Event Committee and/or Become an Event Sponsor
The PBA is encouraging all members to take an active role in building an association that offers great benefits to its' members. The Board of Directors needs as much help as they can get in delivering a year packed full of networking and educational opportunities. Please take a look at the tentative event schedule and let us know if you would be interested in helping plan, organize, and/or facilitate a 2010 program or event.
Additionally, we are looking for sponsors for each event. For a small donation, you can help fund an event and get a good deal of recognition. Not only will your company be listed on the PBA website, monthly e-Newsletter, and Facebook, but you will have an opportunity to host a special table at the event to further promote your business. Contact us for more information.
As mentioned above, we also need sponsors and volunteers for the upcoming Independence Day Parade. Sponsors will have large banners displayed on the side of the float. Space is limited, so sign up soon. Volunteers are also needed to help make flowers, build the float, and walk in the parade. Volunteer now.

How Social Media Can Up Your Image
By Barbara Findlay Schenck
If using social media isn’t part of your company’s marketing discussions, it’s probably the elephant in the room. It’s hard to ignore something that’s hogging headlines, swelling in numbers, easy to use, immediately available and, oh yeah, free.
Increasingly, social media sites are how people connect and communicate. And they also work wonders for businesses, which can use social media contacts to deepen customer relationships, expand brand awareness, share news, extend offers and even improve systems and processes by dealing directly with the ever-increasing number of customers who follow them online. A 2009 Nielsen Online survey shows that social media sites now attract two out of three online users, with greatest growth coming from 35- to 49-year-olds.
Among the horde of small businesses amping up to meet customers on social media sites is 10-year-old Virtual PBX, a telecommunications service provider headquartered in San Jose, California. Web project manager Anthony Vu explains, “Social media makes it easy for customers to attach to us and vice versa, all within the realities of our budget.” (As proof of the effectiveness of social media, I learned of Vu’s social media program through LinkedIn, where he and I, it turns out, share a mutual connection.)
What about your business? Are you ready to expand your social media presence? As you proceed, keep the following information in mind.
First, some definitions: The term social media includes opinion-sharing Internet tools — social networking Web sites, blogs, online forums, photo and video sharing, and instant messages — that people use to spread ideas. Social networking involves using social media to communicate with others.
Who’s using social media?
The audience generally divides into two groups: those below 35 years of age, and those above. Those in the younger group view social networking as a no-brainer; they’re networking online and generating content like there’s no tomorrow, though largely for social purposes. Older users participate more passively, generating little content but watching what others have to say, making them prime targets for social media marketing.
Where do social media networkers hang out?
“The popular kids at the social media lunch table include LinkedIn for business networking, Facebook and MySpace for friends, YouTube for video, Flickr for photos, Digg and StumbleUpon for recommendations, and Yelp for reviews.” That’s the word from social media marketing guru Peter Levitan, president of marketing company Citrus and author of the white paper “Social Studies 101: Deconstructing the Social Media Revolution” (well worth reading at www.citrusbegin.com/whitepapers/). You can also network with members of the Business on Main community right here on this Web site, so check it out!
What’s the purpose of social media networking?
Simply, people network to get connected. A fortunate byproduct is that social media networking builds links to and from your Web site, helping raise your search engine ranking.
Are social media networkers open to marketing messages?
They’re open to personalized, targeted communications. “At Virtual PBX, we’re establishing a single conversational voice across all social media,” says Vu. “And we’re targeting messages so the conversation always revolves around how we can add value to businesses in our community.”
The key, according to Levitan, is to “act like an interesting and informative friend instead of a marketer; like a human being, not an advertiser.” He lauds a dentist who targets messages to the Facebook pages of local residents. “Talk about drilling down,” Levitan says.
How do you proceed?
Learn which social media your customers use and establish a profile on those networks. You don’t have to hit all the outlets at once. Vu says Virtual PBX is establishing its social media voice and footprint with a company blog, a business fan page on Facebook, a LinkedIn profile and a Twitter account. Whatever networks you choose, Levitan advises to commit to continuous, positive interactions with your community. If you don’t have an experienced social media marketer on staff, contract with a professional outside your business for assistance.
Keep sight of your goal
Measure success not by the size of your online following but by how effectively your networking efforts result in customer dialog and relationships. In social media networking, the ultimate prize is an e-mail, phone call or in-person communication that converts a networking contact into a productive — and lasting — business relationship. That’s how social media can work to build your business.
