Martial Arts AmericaKicking It For A Great Cause

Over 75 martial arts students from Penfield, Fairport, Brighton and Pittsford raised over $3000 for the Galisano Childrens Hospital at Strong by participating in a Kick-A-thon and performing 500 or 1000 kicks in a row!

Sensei (karate instructor) Monika Winkelman, program director at the Penfield Branch of Martial Arts America, spearheaded the project and organized the events at both the Penfield and Brighton branches. Many of the karate students who raised money and performed their kicks did it as part of their community service requirement for their upcoming black belt promotion. The participants ranged in age from 8 to 63 years old. The fundraiser was also featured on Channel 13 news and some of the students shared their experiences. Martial Arts America is a family friendly karate program that includes fitness, self-defense, and confidence building which often lead to positive personal and community growth activities like the one mentioned in this article. Seminar on Networking with GRIT a Big Hit!

Laurie Joslin, president of Unlimited Coaching Solutions, presented "Networking GRIT: Generosity, Respect, Integrity and Truth" in March. The event was a great success with a very large member turnout.

Four tips from the expert:

  • Solicit people you meet to talk about their interests when you're networking so that you know if you are likely to make a connection with that person. Use the time you spend consciously by listening with the belief that you have value to add and with the intention of helping the other person.
  • Don't be afraid to approach groups of people, or if you are, try to comprehend why you feel that way without being self-critical. It may seem cynical, but if you approach a group rather than a lone individual, you can screen what they are talking about. Also, there are more potential connections there.
  • Respect yourself by acknowledging the legitimacy of your goals and being assertive. Cut a conversation short by excusing yourself rather than being passive and letting it have a negative effect on your attitude. Be accepting of what you need, which might just be a mental break.
  • Ask open-ended questions to break the ice and control your body language by taking a genuine interest in what the other party is saying. Be aware of their needs and consider the chance to help its own reward.

Edward JonesYour Tax Refund: Invest Today for Tomorrow’s Goals
by PBA Director Curt Regruit, Edward Jones

The tax-filing deadline arrives this week. Will you be getting a refund? If so, take the time to consider how best to use it — because, when used wisely, your tax refund can give you a few added steps on the road toward achieving your financial goals.

Of course, if you filed your taxes weeks ago, you might have already received a refund. But given the current economic environment, you might have kept the money in a “holding place” while you waited for an uptick in the financial markets. At any rate, if you have access to a refund this year, you now have the opportunity to put that money to good use.

How? Here are a few ideas:

• Help fund your IRA. In 2008, the average federal tax refund was $2,429, according to the Internal Revenue Service. If you were to receive that amount, it would cover almost half of your IRA contribution for this year, as the annual limit is $5,000. (You can put in $6,000 if you’re 50 or older). A traditional IRA grows tax deferred, while a Roth IRA grows tax free, provided you have held your account for at least five years and don’t take withdrawals until you reach age 591⁄2. Your IRA may have taken a hit last year, but if you fund it with quality investments and avoid making withdrawals until retirement, you can take important steps to help rebuild your portfolio.

• Help build an emergency fund. You could use part of your refund for an IRA and part to help build an emergency fund. Ideally, you should have six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid account to help pay for unexpected costs, such as a major car repair, a new furnace or a costly medical bill. Without such an emergency fund, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for these costs — and that can hurt your progress toward your financial objectives.

• Help rebalance your portfolio. Based on your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals, you may have decided to put a certain percentage of your assets in “growth” vehicles and a certain percentage in income-oriented investments. At that point, your portfolio was in equilibrium. But during the long bear market, your portfolio may have sustained enough losses to become “unbalanced.” In other words, some of your investments may have lost so much value that they no longer make up the percentage of your holdings that you had originally intended.

Of course, you could wait for these investments to bounce back — and they may, given enough time — but if you wanted to speed up the rebalancing process, you could use your tax refund to add the right types of new investments to your mix.
Ironic as it may seem, there may not be a better year in which to invest your refund. You can find many quality investments at reasonable prices today, so your refund can help you add extra shares to your accounts — and the more shares you own, the better off you may be when the market turns around. So put your refund to work soon.

Canandaigua National Bank Enhancing Your Financial Fitness
by James Terwilliger, Canandaigua National Bank & Trust

Most of us will never win the lottery...or inherit a windfall from a rich uncle...or pick the next million-to-one hot stock.

That's all luck.

Luck will not secure our retirement. Nor will it fund our children's educations. But smart, disciplined planning can help us do just that and much more. It can help us reach our goals - and not just financial goals. As we know, financial resources are only a means to an end. The end is a fulfilling life with dreams to be lived and achieved.

It is never too early and never too late to take charge of one's financial future through formal financial planning. Financial planning is not just about investing. It's much broader. It's really about getting one's entire financial house in order, much like partnering with a trusted physician to establish and maintain physical well-being.
Disciplined personal financial planning helps to ensure:

  • you and your family are adequately protected from undo risk
  • you are taking advantage of available income tax deductions and credits
  • you are aware of tax-advantaged ways to save for college and are saving at a rate that will meet your funding goals
  • your investments are adequately diversified within an asset allocation consistent with your risk tolerance, time horizon, and financial goals
  • you are saving at a rate that will meet your retirement income goals and timetable
  • your estate plan is consistent with your charitable and legacy interests, asset titling, and life-insurance/retirement-plan beneficiary designations

Comprehensive financial planning is a process, not a one-time event or product. The process typically consists of six steps:

  • Develop goals and set priorities: Goals are a must for any plan. Where do you want to be and by when? What do you want to accomplish? Prioritization is important since, many times, it may not be possible to achieve all goals concurrently.
  • Assess assets/resources: Taking a current-state financial snapshot establishes the starting point. This step is data-intensive and involves documenting all your holdings; cash flows; insurance; taxes; wills; trusts; estimated future assets, income, and expenditures; and any special circumstances.
  • Identify barriers to reaching goals: Can all goals be met, and if not, why not? Are there competing goals, and if so, which are more important? What are potential barriers and what tools or approaches are available to eliminate or bypass any barriers?
  • Incorporate strategies into an integrated plan: The key word here is "integrated." Since goals and associated strategies are usually interdependent, the pieces of an effective plan are assembled in a way that optimizes outcomes. In the absence of such integration, the individual pieces are not linked and financial decisions can become disconnected and even arbitrary.
  • Put the plan into action: This is an often-ignored critical step. A plan is worthless if it is not implemented. An action checklist ・detailing what is to be done, by whom, and by when ・can be a big help.
  • Monitor progress, evaluate results, and adjust plan as necessary: Is the plan working? Has something changed ・your goals or your circumstances? Life happens. Things change. It is important to keep the plan flexible to respond to changes and, when necessary, reset the course.

This takes us right back to Step 1, and the process repeats. When done well, comprehensive financial planning becomes a dynamic, life-long journey. It provides a framework for making ongoing financial decisions consistent with long-term goals.
Most folks do not have the knowledge, training, time, or desire to guide themselves through the process. Partnering with a trusted financial planner to provide the expertise and discipline is normally advised. A planner can be particularly helpful in guiding the implementation step.

When searching for a planner, be sure to talk with several, learn about their qualifications and experience, find out how they are paid (fee only vs. commission), and determine if they are selling product. You will probably be happier working with a "pure" planner vs. one who may use the plan to peddle a product.
